Bounce Day Blog
What is Bounce Day?
For the newest information please go to www.Bouncday.org
Bounce Day aims to improve community resilience through an integrated disaster response experience that provides opportunities for education, collaboration, and innovation. Bounce Day is put on by a collaboration of Mayo Clinic researchers, educators and students, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Military medical personnel, local medical alliances, theatre groups and lay community members. Actors simulating illness (zombies) and those affected by the crumbling of society will interact with participants learning both medical and nonmedical response protocols ranging from vaccination and treatment to refugee camp management and security.

News Coverage of the 2014 Bounce Day
KTTC Rochester, Austin, Mason City News, Weather and Sports

While we are so thankful for the news coverage, we do want to make a few notes:
1. Saturday's event was a simulation not a training or an exercise. We are not designing or testing systems of specific response for "zombies", we were disseminating broad skills and understanding about response tactics.
2. The main outcomes of our event were adaptive leadership, communication, teamwork, interdisciplinary and intergenerational collaboration NOT being trained as specific responders.
3. Preparedness and Community Resilience are different, but complementary

Trauma Team Example
Unfortunately, we did not capture the introductions and plan discussion at the beginning of the simulation that is VITAL to any response.

4-Step Family Emergency Communication Plan
- Identify a friend or relative who lives out-of-town for everyone to notify. Make sure you tell this person they're the contact.
- MEMORIZE their number AND save it as "ICE" (in case of emergency) in all phones and carry it on paper in your purse, wallet or backpack.
- If possible, text don't call this person in an emergency. Text messages can often get around network disruptions when a phone call might not be able to get through.
- Subscribe to alert services by visiting your local Office of Emergency Management web site. For Rochester, that is: https://users.alerts.rochestermn.gov/.
